Detailed Steps for Performing Umrah

 1. Ihram (State of Ritual Purity)

Ihram is the intention to enter the state of Umrah and must be done from the designated Miqat (entry point). The steps include:

  1. Ghusl (Purification) and Perfume: It is recommended to perform ghusl (ritual washing) and apply perfume before Ihram.
  2. Wearing Ihram Garments:
    • For men: Wear two unstitched white garments (Izar and Rida).
    • For women: Wear modest Islamic attire without covering the face or hands.
  3. Intention (Niyyah) for Umrah: At Miqat, one should say:
    • "Labbayk Umrah" (Here I am, O Allah, for Umrah). (Men say it aloud, women say it silently).
  4. Talbiyah (Chanting the Pilgrimage Call): Start reciting:
    • "Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka La Shareeka Laka Labbayk, Innal-Hamda Wan-Ni'mata Laka Wal-Mulk, La Shareeka Lak."
    • Continue reciting the Talbiyah until reaching Masjid Al-Haram (The Grand Mosque).

2. Entering Masjid Al-Haram & Tawaf (Circumambulation)

  1. Entering the Grand Mosque:
    • Enter with the right foot and say:
"Bismillah, wassalatu wassalamu 'ala Rasulillah, Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik" (In the name of Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Prophet. O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy).
  2. Proceed to the Kaaba and Begin Tawaf:
    • Ensure you are in a state of Wudu (ablution).
    • Start at Hajr Al-Aswad (Black Stone), if possible, kiss it or touch it; otherwise, point towards it and say:
"Bismillah Allahu Akbar" (In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest).
    • Perform seven rounds (counterclockwise) keeping the Kaaba to your left.
    • Recite supplications during Tawaf; there are no specific required Duas for each round.
    • Upon reaching Rukn Al-Yamani (Yemeni Corner), touch it if possible and recite:
"Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina adhaban-nar"
(Our Lord, grant us good in this world and in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire).
    • After completing the seventh round, proceed to Maqam Ibrahim (Station of Abraham) and pray two Rak’ahs (units of prayer), if possible.
      • First Rak’ah: Recite Surah Al-Fatiha and Surah Al-Kafirun.
      • Second Rak’ah: Recite Surah Al-Fatiha and Surah Al-Ikhlas.

3. Sa’i (Walking between Safa and Marwa)

  1. Go to Safa and Begin Sa’i:
    • Recite: "Inna as-Safa wal-Marwata min sha'a'irillah, abda'u bima bada'Allahu bihi."
(Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah; I begin with what Allah has begun with).
    • Stand at Safa, face the Kaaba, and make Dua.
  2. Walking between Safa and Marwa:
    • Walk towards Marwa, making supplications.
    • When reaching the green marker area, men should jog (women walk normally).
    • At Marwa, make Dua, then return towards Safa.
    • Repeat this process seven times (Safa to Marwa is one round, Marwa to Safa is another).

4. Shaving or Trimming Hair

  1. For men: It is recommended to shave all hair, or trim an equal portion from all over the head.
  2. For women: Cut about 1-2 cm from the length of the hair.

Once hair is cut, the state of Ihram ends, and all restrictions are lifted. Your Umrah is now complete!

Important Notes:

  • Maintaining Wudu (Ablution) is necessary for Tawaf but not for Sa’i.
  • Umrah can be performed at any time of the year, unlike Hajj, which has a specific time.
  • Dua is open throughout the rituals, there are no obligatory supplications.
  • Recite Talbiyah frequently until Tawaf begins.

By following these steps, you complete your Umrah according to the Sunnah. May Allah accept your Umrah and grant you blessings! 🤍
